 Meta Tags are used by search engines to create text descriptions and titles for your site. When you view search results in search engines like AltaVista, Google and MSN search, the title and description of each site is created by Meta Tags. Meta Tags are powerful "hidden" lines of code that are used by thousands of search engines to describe your site to searchers. They also help to improve your sites ranking in specific searches. We recommend creating uniqe Meta Tags for several pages within your site to maximize your search engine exposure. For more information on how to improve your sites placement through Meta Tags, learn about each Meta Tag element below: Title: Creating a title that concisely describes your site and includes desired search terms is important. Your site's title will be the first thing seen by searchers. It needs to grab their attention. Search engines also use the words in your title to match search terms. For example, if someone searches for "web design" you will notice that the majority of site results will have the term "web design" in their title. Your site's title will also be displayed on the top of your webpage. If you look at the top left corner of this page you will see the title for this page. We recommend using a title that is 65 characters or less (about 10 words). Search engines will simply cut off your title if it becomes too long. Description: The page description should provide users with an idea of the content on your page and utilize desired search terms. Search engines will use the words in your description to position your site in search results. If someone searches for "Boston apartments" and this phrase is in your description, you will most likely be included in the search results. We recommend creating a description that is 125 characters or less (about 25 words). Search engines will cut-off your description mid-sentence if it becomes too long. Keywords: Keywords are only used by search engines to help determine search results. They are not seen by visitors to your site or displayed in search results. Try to include as many keywords as possible that pertain to content on your pages. Keywords can be single words or phrases that are separated by commas. There is no set rule on the number of words to include, but we recommend being very descriptive. Don't forget to add misspelled keywords as well! |
