Legitimate Alternatives to SPAM Email Marketing

    by Neal St. Clair

SPAM email is a growing concern for Internet Users around the world. According to a study done by Jupiter Research, Internet users currently receive 140 billion pieces of SPAM a year. By 2007, that number is projected to be 645 billion, or 3,900 emails per person.

For this article I want to focus on what we can do as Internet Marketers to help combat the increasing amount of SPAM out there. This is a very important topic for all small business owners and Internet Marketers because when email is done right it can be very effective and affordable. These companies that repeatedly send millions of un-solicited and un-targeted emails are giving all of us legitimate marketers a bad name! In addition, SPAM is not only annoying, it is soon to become illegal in many states. The Los Angeles Times published an article last month stating a new bill is under consideration that would charge SPAMMERS $500 per email sent to California Internet users.

Steps to legitimate and effective email campaigns
    1. Build Opt-in Lists
It is more important than ever to build opt-in lists of email addresses from your website. New laws being proposed will make it illegal to send email to anyone without their prior consent to receive email from you. By offering users content they value, they will provide you their email address and permission to send them messages. Collecting and storing email address from your website is easier than you might think. There are many applications available that will provide you all the tools you need to manage mailing lists from your website. I also encourage you to learn some basic HTML code that will allow you to add forms to your website.

    2. Send targeted email messages
How many times have you received an email for something you have no interest in? I'm sure you're like me and you simply delete the message and never give it a second thought. Over the years, response rates for emails have dramatically dropped and this is do to SPAMMERS sending thousands of un-targeted emails with the idea of quantity over quality. The truth is that targeted emails still work! I have attained up to 10% response rates for clients when the campaign is targeted specifically for the audience. You will see greater results if you send a specific message to 500 people that you know have an interest in your message versus sending the same message 5,000 random people.

    3. Honor all Remove Requests
There is nothing more frustrating than trying to OPT-OUT of a mailing list and not being removed. Or even worse, receiving an email with no OPT-OUT option. It is very easy to include a link or message in all emails you send out instruction people to respond with the word REMOVE to be taken off the list. Why would you want to continue sending messages to people that have no interest anyway? It is a waste of time and money.

Email Marketing can be very affordable and effective for your business if it is done the right way. I hope all legitimate Internet Marketers and Business Owners will join me in following the simple steps listed above to help combat the SPAMMERS out there.

If you are not already collecting OPT-IN Email address for your business, I recommend you start now.
