Search Engine Optimization - Beyond META Tags

Since the advent of Search Engines on the Internet, the term "search engine optimization" has been highly debated. Terms like link popularity, META Tags, keywords, alt text, etc have been thrown around and their importance questioned. While there are several technical aspects of search engine optimization that are important, even required, there are also many common sense steps you can take to improve the amount of traffic you receive from Search Engines.

    • Use clear and concise text on your Webpage

    • While search engines often do employ complex formulas to rank websites, the truth is they also read the text on your webpages and use this to determine search results. Every piece of text on your pages is read, and the higher it is on your page, the more weight it is given. Keep this in mind when writing text on your webpages and make sure you are including text that you would like to appear for in search results in these descriptions.

    • Make sure your website is fully-functional prior to search engine submission

    • Many search engines, and especially human-edited directories will not accept your website if there are any broken links or images. Some search engines and directories take many months to add sites to their database, so you want to make sure you get it right the first time. Take the time to make sure your site is completely functional because it will save you a great deal of time in getting your website listed in the major search engines and directories.

    • Research your competition

    • Not only is it a good idea to see what your competition is up to from a business standpoint, it is important to know how they are attracting people to their websites. You can tell a lot about their search engine strategy by viewing their page titles and descriptive text. It might even give you some ideas of keywords and phrases to target that you haven't thought of.

    • Submit more than just your homepage

    • Most search engines will accept multiple pages from the same domain. This means you have the ability to list all significant pages of your website. Create unique titles for each page and make sure the text includes keywords and phrases you would like to appear for in search results. Submitting multiple pages is a great way to target numerous keywords and search phrases without overloading a single page.

    • Submit your website often

    • It is important to submit your website every few months to all search engines. As more and more websites appear on the World Wide Web there is more competition for traffic. By submitting your website often, you ensure that they have the most recent version of your website on file.

If you're looking for more personalized tips on ways to optimize your website for search engines, submit your site for a free website review. idesignbusiness will analyze your site and provide objective tips on ways to improve your search engine presence.
